The Florida Gulf Coast is offering some excellent fishing opportunities this week, with a variety of species biting across the region.
Inshore Fishing:
- Redfish: The redfish bite has been strong, especially around the grass flats and mangroves. Early morning and late evening have been the most productive times. Live shrimp and cut bait are working well, but topwater lures are also seeing some action.
- Snook: Snook are being caught in good numbers near the passes and around structure. Night fishing with live pilchards or artificial shrimp has yielded great results.
- Speckled Trout: Speckled trout are plentiful on the deeper grass flats. Drift fishing with soft plastics or live shrimp under a popping cork has been effective.

Nearshore Fishing:
- Spanish Mackerel: Spanish mackerel schools are active along the beaches and nearshore reefs. Fast-moving spoons and Gotcha plugs are enticing plenty of strikes.
- King Mackerel: Kingfish are patrolling the nearshore waters. Slow trolling with live bait such as threadfin herring or blue runners has been the key to success.
- Cobia: Cobia have been spotted around buoys and markers. They are biting on live crabs and large soft plastics.
Offshore Fishing:
- Red Snapper: The red snapper season is still open, and anglers are reporting excellent catches on the deeper reefs and wrecks. Use large cut baits or live pinfish to target these bottom dwellers.
- Grouper: Gag and red grouper are being caught in good numbers. Dropping large live baits or heavy jigs to the bottom structure is producing solid results.
- Amberjack: Amberjack are hitting hard around offshore wrecks and reefs. Live blue runners and vertical jigs are the go-to baits for these powerful fish.

Tarpon Fishing: The tarpon migration is in full swing along the coast. Boca Grande Pass and the beaches from Clearwater to Sarasota are hotspots. Large live baits like crabs and mullet, as well as heavy artificial lures, are attracting these silver kings.
Weather and Tides: Expect calm seas and light winds throughout the weekend, making for excellent fishing conditions. Check local tide charts to plan your trips around peak feeding times.
Tips:
- Stay hydrated and use plenty of sunscreens as the summer heat is intense.
- Bring a variety of baits and lures to adapt to changing conditions and fish preferences.
- Be mindful of the regulations and seasons for different species to ensure sustainable fishing practices.
