Anglers along the Florida Gulf Coast are enjoying a mixed bag of fishing opportunities as summer slowly transitions into fall.
Warm water temperatures persist, but with Hurricane Debby’s recent passing, some areas are experiencing clearer water conditions, improving visibility for sight fishing.

Inshore:
- Redfish: Big redfish are being reported in good numbers along the Nature Coast, particularly around the flats and mangrove shorelines. Live bait like shrimp or pinfish is proving effective, as are soft plastic lures and gold spoons.
- Snook: Snook fishing is picking up as waters clear up post-hurricane. Anglers are finding success around structures like docks, bridges, and mangrove roots. Topwater lures and live bait like pilchards or greenbacks are producing good results.
- Trout: Speckled trout are still around, although the bite can be more challenging in the warmer water. Look for them in deeper grass flats and channels. Live shrimp under a popping cork or soft plastic jerkbaits are good choices.
Nearshore:
- Snapper: Red snapper season might be closed in federal waters, but there are still opportunities for lane snapper and mangrove snapper nearshore. Live shrimp or small pinfish on light tackle are the way to go.
- Tarpon: Juvenile tarpon are providing plenty of action in the bays and passes. Look for rolling tarpon and cast live bait or topwater lures in their path.
- Cobia: Cobia are being spotted around buoys, wrecks, and artificial reefs. Sight casting with live bait or jigs is a popular technique.

Offshore:
- Pelagic: The pelagic bite remains strong, with reports of mahi-mahi, tuna, and marlin offshore. Trolling with ballyhoo or artificial lures is a good bet.
- Bottom Fishing: Amberjack, grouper, and snapper are available for bottom fishing enthusiasts. Live bait or cut bait on heavy tackle is recommended.
- Sharks: Shark fishing is also heating up, with opportunities to target species like tiger sharks and bull sharks. Use large baits and heavy tackle for these powerful predators.
