Democrat Charlie Crist apparently is ready to impose a mask mandate, if elected, even though he refused to answer questions about it.
Two videos have emerged on Twitter in recent days, one showing the Clearwater Democrat nominee telling a group of voters he would be “open” to forcing Floridians to mask up, while the other showed him running from the question.
In the first video, posted on Twitter by the account DeSantis War Room, which supports incumbent Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, Crist tells a small group of voters, “I would be open to doing what scientists advise — not political scientists.”
“I just read an article this morning. I’m glad you brought it up,” he added. “So I’m going to the airport right after this. I’m going to Orlando, and I’m going to wear a mask on the plane. You don’t have to anymore, but I’m going to because Florida is experiencing an uptick that began this week. And it’s not even the Omicron B2. It’s a new variant.”
The second video, also posted by DeSantis War Room, shows independent reporter Chris Nelson asking Crist about his comments and whether he would impose a mask mandate, including for children.
Crist scurries away and boards his campaign SUV without answering.
“You’re not being honest, Charlie,” Nelson tells Crist as he seeks to flee. “And you would re-implement mask mandates for kids. You know you would.”
“Very sad you can’t even answer,” Nelson added as Crist seeks to get away. “Very sad. Ron DeSantis answered my questions. Very sad and very telling right there that he won’t answer my question.”
The same video also includes a clip of Karla Hernandez, the Miami teachers’ union boss who is Crist’s running mate, saying mask mandates are a must.
“It’s completely unsafe to think we’re going to give people a choice to whether or not wear a mask, when we have to be collectively responsible,” Hernandez said in the clip.
