Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Calls Special Legislative Session To Address Key State Issues

Governor Ron DeSantis has issued a proclamation calling for a special session of the Florida Legislature to convene on January 27, 2025. The session, lasting through January 31, will focus on pressing issues including illegal immigration, condominium regulation, agricultural relief, the My Safe Florida Home program, and election integrity.

Combatting Illegal Immigration
Governor DeSantis will highlight the strain caused by the federal government’s immigration policies, which he described as a “brazen disregard for the rule of law.”

The governor noted Florida’s role in supporting President-elect Donald J. Trump’s forthcoming plans to address border security following his inauguration on January 20, 2025.

Condominium Regulation
In response to challenges in the condominium market, including rising costs for assessments, repairs, and inspections, the Legislature will address solutions to ensure affordability for Florida residents.

Agricultural Relief
Florida’s agricultural industry has faced significant disruption due to recent natural disasters. The special session will aim to address these challenges and provide relief to affected communities.

My Safe Florida Home Program
The governor’s proclamation also includes efforts to replenish the My Safe Florida Home program, which provides resources to strengthen homes against hurricanes and natural disasters.

Citizens’ Initiative Petition Process
Election integrity remains a focal point, with plans to close loopholes and strengthen the citizens’ initiative petition process following reports of fraud and exploitation during the last election cycle.

In his proclamation, Governor DeSantis emphasized the importance of swift action, saying, “The State of Florida is experiencing a wide range of issues that require immediate attention. From addressing the federal government’s failed immigration policies to ensuring the integrity of our elections and providing relief to our agricultural industry, this session is essential to safeguarding the interests of Floridians.”

The special session will convene at 9:00 a.m. on January 27 and conclude no later than 11:59 p.m. on January 31, 2025. The governor’s office has also released a proclamation and related materials, which are accessible online.
