Still, Crist, a Clearwater Democrat who was once a Republican, was critical of DeSantis and the law.

Florida Gov. DeSantis’ Team Lights Up Social Media Over Crist’s Choice Of Running Mate

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ communications team is already lighting up social media about Democratic Rep. Charlie Crist’s rumored pick for a running mate.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ communications team is already lighting up social media about Democratic Rep. Charlie Crist’s rumored pick for a running mate.

As The Free Press noted Friday, Crist, a Clearwater Democrat who crushed Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried in his party’s gubernatorial primary Tuesday, was expected to announce Karla Hernandez-Mats as his choice for lieutenant governor.

Hernandez-Mats is head of the Miami-Dade County teachers’ union.

In response, Christina Pushaw, the Republican incumbent’s campaign spokeswoman, highlighted some of Hernandez-Mats’ background while leading one of the largest education union chapters in the country.

On Twitter, Pushaw posted an October 2021 tweet by Hernandez-Mats in which she referred to parents complaining about COVID-19 mandates as “anti-vaxxers” who were spreading “misinformation” and “disinformation.”

The tweet included a political cartoon featuring horror-movie villains – such as Freddy Krueger from “Nightmare on Elm Street” and the goalie-masked chainsaw-wielding freak from “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” – as parents going to a school board meeting.

“The craziness is real. God be with us,” Hernandez-Mats tweeted with the cartoon.

Pushaw also highlighted tweets that showed Hernandez-Mats got a hearse adorned with DeSantis’ picture to lead a caravan of teachers who protested the governor’s plan to reopen schools in 2020.

By doing so, DeSantis helped Florida’s children from suffering many of the learning losses experienced in locked-down blue states like California and New York.

Pushaw noted another tweet by conservative writer Christopher Rufo, who reposted a tweet by Hernandez-Mats that called “quality education” a “civil right’s (sic) issue.”

“Charlie Crist’s running mate promises a ‘quality education,’ but doesn’t know how to use an apostrophe,” Rufo wrote. “A perfect symbol for the teachers union.”

Crist has said he wants to reunite Florida after DeSantis’ “divisiveness,” yet his choice of running mate once again demonstrates how out of touch the former Republican governor has become since becoming a Democrat years ago.

Left-wing education leaders like Hernandez-Mats have steadfastly rejected parents’ quest not only to keep kids in school, but to spare them the indoctrination of Critical Race Theory, gender ideology and borderline pornographic books in school libraries.
