Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday signed two bills aimed at helping military veterans and their family members.

One of the bills (HB 725) will expand eligibility for state veterans’ nursing homes to include spouses or surviving spouses of certain veterans.

The other bill (HB 1329) includes a series of changes, such as requiring the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to waive hunting and fishing fees for veterans with service-related disabilities.

Also, the bill will require instruction for middle- and high-school students on the importance of Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

A staff analysis of the bill said students are already required to be taught about the sacrifices of military veterans around Medal of Honor Day, Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

DeSantis signed the bills, which will take effect July 1, during an appearance at the Baldomero Lopez State Veterans’ Nursing Home in Land O’ Lakes. The bills passed during the legislative session that ended in March.
