Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis today recognized the winners of the Black History Month student art and essay contests, as well as the Excellence in Education Award winners, in an event that celebrated the rich contributions of African Americans to Florida’s success.
This year’s contests, themed “Honoring African American Contributions to Florida’s Success,” were made possible through a partnership between the Florida Department of Education, Volunteer Florida, the Florida Lottery, and the Florida Prepaid College Foundation.

“It is important that our students learn about American history and the contributions that African American leaders have made to the success of our state,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “I am proud of these students who went above and beyond to apply what they have learned to these contests.”
Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. also praised the initiative, stating, “I am proud of every student that participated in this year’s Black History Month contest. Their submissions were inspiring and are a testament to the important work that our teachers do every day to ignite curiosity and learning in our students.”
Volunteer Florida CEO Josie Tamayo added, “Volunteer Florida is proud to recognize the winners of this year’s contests. Their creativity and passion reflect the rich history, culture, and contributions of African Americans throughout our state. We celebrate their achievements and the lasting impact they will have in their communities and beyond.”

Student Art Contest Winners
The art contest invited submissions from students in kindergarten through third grade. Four winners were selected, each receiving a $100 gift card for school supplies and a one-year pass to Florida state parks.

Student Essay Contest Winners
Students in grades 4 through 12 were challenged to craft essays that explored this year’s theme. Six winners were chosen – two each from the elementary (grades 4–5), middle school (grades 6–8), and high school (grades 9–12) levels. Winners received a two-year Florida College Plan scholarship provided by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation, along with a $100 gift card for school supplies.

Excellence in Education Award Winners
The Excellence in Education Award recognized four educators whose exceptional contributions were highlighted by nominations from principals, teachers, parents, and students. Each winner received a $2,500 monetary award from Volunteer Florida.
