Upon returning from a trade mission in Italy, Governor Ron DeSantis must appoint a successor for U.S. Senator Marco Rubio and set a special election for U.S. Rep. Mike Waltz’s seat. President-elect Donald Trump has tapped Rubio as Secretary of State and Waltz as National Security Adviser.

DeSantis’ choice for Rubio’s replacement will serve until the 2026 election, as Rubio’s current term ends in 2028. Speculation on potential appointees includes Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez, Attorney General Ashley Moody, and former House Speaker Jose Oliva. Naming a current officeholder like Nunez or Moody could trigger further shifts in state politics.

DeSantis must also address the vacant seat in Congressional District 6, covering parts of Flagler, Volusia, and Marion counties. Possible candidates include Jacksonville Council member Rory Diamond and former Sheriff David Shoar.

Trump’s new administration features several Florida picks, highlighting his strong ties to the state. Susie Wiles, a Florida native, was recently named White House Chief of Staff. With Florida’s deep Republican bench, further appointments from the state are expected.

Rubio, a former Florida House Speaker, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010 and has been a prominent Republican voice on foreign policy. Waltz, a decorated Green Beret and experienced Pentagon adviser, currently serves on key congressional committees related to defense and foreign affairs.

The next steps for DeSantis could significantly shape Florida’s political landscape, setting off a chain of appointments and elections in the coming months.
