Governor Ron DeSantis announced Thursday a robust deployment of state law enforcement resources to ensure a safe and orderly spring break across Florida, directing the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and other agencies to assist local police with additional personnel and cutting-edge tools.

The initiative, which began February 27 and runs through April, aims to replicate last year’s success in curbing lawlessness during the annual influx of visitors.

“We do not tolerate lawlessness,” DeSantis said in a statement from Miami Beach. “Last year, we set out to have a safe and orderly spring break—and thanks to the efforts of law enforcement and local leaders, we delivered. This year, we’re doing it again.” He emphasized that while Florida welcomes tourists to enjoy its attractions, “we will not allow mayhem to ensue, or the inmates to run the asylum.”

The FHP has already mobilized over 100 troopers to support 12 local agencies requesting aid, with more resources—like drones, aircraft, BearCat armored vehicles, and K9 units—on standby.

“From Miami Beach to Panama City Beach, State Troopers will be amplifying local law enforcement officers to keep your spring break experience safe and enjoyable,” said Dave Kerner, Executive Director of the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. “We’re honored to assist.”

Last year’s spring break crackdown set the tone, with 140 troopers deployed statewide, including nearly 50 in Miami Beach alone. The 2024 effort netted 36 felony arrests (16 in Miami Beach), 51 misdemeanor arrests (17 in Miami Beach), 11 DUIs (4 in Miami Beach), and 12 seized firearms (6 in Miami Beach), alongside over 4,200 moving citations and 259 commercial vehicle citations.

DeSantis pointed to these stats as proof of the strategy’s effectiveness, vowing a repeat performance.

The move comes as Florida braces for throngs of college students and vacationers, a boon for tourism but a perennial challenge for public safety. Miami Beach, a hotspot for spring break revelry, has leaned on state support to manage crowds and curb violence in past years. With troopers now patrolling alongside local forces—and high-tech assets in the wings—the state aims to keep the peace without stifling the fun.

As spring break ramps up, Floridians and visitors alike will see a beefed-up police presence designed to deter trouble and ensure the Sunshine State’s beaches stay open for enjoyment—not chaos.
