Florida is lending a helping hand to its neighbors up north as a 35-member team from the Florida Forest Service has been deployed to South Carolina to assist in battling a series of wildfires.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced the deployment in response to the ongoing wildfire emergency in the Carolinas. Over the past week, North Carolina and South Carolina have faced more than 170 wildfires, fueled by dry conditions and low humidity.

The National Weather Service had issued warnings about the elevated fire risk across the Southeast over the weekend, citing low relative humidity and limited moisture in vegetation as contributing factors.

“Florida stands ready to assist our neighbors during times of need,” said Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson. “Our well-trained wildfire firefighters are some of the best in the nation, and we are proud to offer their expertise and support to help contain these fires and protect lives and property.”

The Florida crew will join firefighters from across the region who are working tirelessly to contain the blazes and protect communities.
