The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has announced a significant change, renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” in all official materials. This change is being implemented in accordance with President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 14172 and FWC Executive Order 25-04.

The FWC’s decision will affect all Commission documents, materials, rules within Chapter 68, F.A.C., maps, forms, and resources.

“As a vital resource for the State of Florida and its citizenry, providing both recreational and economic opportunities through fishing, boating, tourism and other outdoor pursuits, the Gulf of America plays a significant role in our nation and state’s economy and leisure activities,” said FWC Executive Director Roger Young.

The FWC has several divisions, offices, and programs that directly interact with the Gulf of America, including:

  • Division of Marine Fisheries Management: Responsible for developing recommendations for managing and enhancing commercial and recreational saltwater fisheries, implementing marine fisheries management programs, and assisting in artificial reef development.
  • Fish and Wildlife Research Institute: Serves as the primary source of research and technical information for wildlife and marine life in Florida.
  • Division of Law Enforcement: Enforces laws and rules related to the management, protection, conservation, and safe use of marine life resources and state waterways.
  • Boating and Waterways Section within the Division of Law Enforcement: Manages and promotes safe boating, including waterway markers, boating education, improving boating access, and removing derelict vessels.
