Florida Felon Charged With Drug And Firearm Offenses Now Facing Life In Prison

A Florida man has been charged with a litany of drug offenses, including distribution of controlled substances, possession with the intent to distribute controlled substances, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

If convicted on all counts, Shawndell Johnson, 31, Melbourne, faces a minimum mandatory penalty of 15 years, up to life, in federal prison.

According to the indictment, on September 1 and September 8, 2022, Johnson distributed a mixture containing fentanyl.

Officials say on March 16, 2023, Johnson “possessed with the intent to distribute” 50 grams or more of methamphetamine, 400 grams or more of a mixture containing fentanyl, and 500 grams or more of a mixture containing cocaine.

Johnson is also charged with possessing multiple firearms and ammunition despite his previous felony convictions for third-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and with possessing a firearm in furtherance of his March 16, 2023, drug offenses.

The Drug Enforcement Administration, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated this case.  Assistant United States Attorney Megan Testerman will prosecute the case.
