Florida Democrat Tees Up Special Election Bid In Miami-Dade County

A Florida Democrat has filed paperwork to run in a special election this fall to replace former state Rep. Juan Alfonso Fernandez-Barquin in Miami-Dade County’s House District 118. A Florida Democrat has filed paperwork to run in a special election this fall to replace former state Rep. Juan Alfonso Fernandez-Barquin in Miami-Dade County’s House District 118. Miami Democrat Johnny Gonzalo Farias opened a campaign account Thursday, according to the state Division of Elections website.

Gov. Ron DeSantis called the special election after appointing Fernandez-Barquin, a Republican, as Miami-Dade County clerk of court and comptroller.

A special primary election will be held on Oct. 3, with a general election on Dec. 5.

The formal candidate qualifying period will start at 8 a.m. Wednesday and end at noon on Aug. 10.

Republicans Christian Chavez and Michael Redondo were listed on the state website Thursday as having campaign accounts open to run in November 2024 in District 118.

But they can switch the accounts to run in the special election.
