A Florida family was given federal prison sentences Friday for selling a counterfeit COVID-19 remedy.

Mark Grenon, 66, of Bradenton, Fla., and one of his sons, Joseph Grenon, 36, were sentenced to five years in prison for conspiring to defraud the government, while the two other sons, Jonathan Grenon, 37, and Jordan Grenon, 29, were sentenced to 12 years and seven months in prison for defrauding the government and contempt of court

“The Grenons poisoned thousands of people with their bogus miracle cure, which was nothing more than industrial bleach,” Michael Homer, an assistant U.S. attorney who prosecuted the case, said in a statement. “They targeted vulnerable people who were suffering from life-threatening illnesses and who were desperate for a cure.”

The Grenons marketed an industrial bleach, known as Chlorine Dioxide, as a miracle cure for COVID-19. They named their concoction the Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS). However, this substance is typically used for industrial purposes, such as treating textiles and purifying water.

The family claimed that MMS could cure 95% of all known diseases, including Alzheimer’s, autism, multiple sclerosis, brain cancer, and HIV/AIDS, in addition to COVID-19. However, medical experts have warned that ingesting this solution is akin to drinking bleach, which could result in fatal consequences.

The Grenons were found guilty of conspiring to defraud the United States and deliver misbranded drugs by a federal jury in Miami. They chose to represent themselves but remained silent during the two-day trial.

The prosecution dubbed the Grenons as ‘snake-oil salesmen’ and ‘conmen.’ They revealed that the family had made approximately $1 million from selling their lethal concoction.

Despite a court order in 2020 to cease the sales of MMS, the Grenons continued their operations, which resulted in additional contempt charges for Jonathan and Jordan Grenon.
