Florida And Puerto Rico Men Plead Guilty To Illegal Firearms Trafficking Conspiracy

Joseph Alfredo Bonano Aviles, 25, of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Jose Javier Corchado Montanez, 34, of Kissimmee, Florida, have pleaded guilty to conspiracy to transfer firearms out of state, announced Acting United States Attorney Sara C. Sweeney.

According to the plea agreements, between September and November 2021, Montanez, operating from the Middle District of Florida, illegally shipped multiple firearms to Aviles in Puerto Rico. Neither man was a licensed firearms dealer, manufacturer, collector, or importer.

Both Aviles and Montanez face a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set.

The case was the result of an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Amanda Daniels.
