In a surprising announcement today, Florida A&M University (FAMU) President Larry Robinson, Ph.D., revealed his decision to resign. Robinson, who has served as president for nearly seven years, conveyed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the state’s sole public Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in a letter to the University’s Board of Trustees Chair, Kristin Harper.
Robinson’s tenure has marked both accomplishments and challenges. Under his leadership, FAMU has seen enrollment growth, boasting over 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The university has also made strides in research and academic programs.

However, recent months have brought scrutiny due to a failed $237 million donation, leading to an ongoing investigation. This incident and concerns regarding the performance of some professional licensure programs have added pressure on Robinson and the Board of Trustees.
In his letter, Robinson expressed his appreciation for the support and dedication of the FAMU community, emphasizing the university’s pivotal role in shaping students’ lives and contributing to the state’s progress. He indicated his intention to continue serving the FAMU community in the future.
The Board of Trustees will now convene to determine the next steps in the search for a new president. The exact date of Robinson’s departure will be finalized in consultation with the Board. As FAMU moves forward, the university remains committed to its mission of providing a high-quality education and fostering student success.
