Florida Agriculture Gets Major Water Quality Boost: Simpson Announces BMP Manual Updates

Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson has announced the completion of significant updates to nine agricultural Best Management Practices (BMP) manuals, and the introduction of a new manual for small farms and specialty livestock.

These updates, the first comprehensive revisions in nearly 20 years for some manuals, aim to equip Florida’s agricultural producers with the latest, research-based tools to improve water quality.

“Florida’s farmers, ranchers, and growers are the original stewards of our land and water resources, and these updates ensure they have the latest, most effective tools to continue producing the safe, affordable, and abundant food supply we all rely on,” said Commissioner Simpson. “These Best Management Practices manuals, updated in partnership with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the University of Florida, and industry partners, provide real solutions that benefit both Florida’s natural resources and our agricultural economy.”

The updated BMP manuals, accessible on the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) website, provide specific, research-based practices for various agricultural sectors, including citrus, cattle, dairy, nursery, and vegetable operations. The newly introduced manual for small farms and specialty livestock addresses the unique needs of these producers.

The manuals focus on key areas such as:

  • Nutrient Management: Optimizing fertilizer use to reduce runoff.
  • Irrigation Management: Conserving water and minimizing nutrient loss.
  • Water Resource Protection: Implementing buffers and setbacks to protect waterways.

These updates reflect advancements in agricultural science and water quality research, ensuring that Florida’s agricultural practices remain sustainable and environmentally responsible.

Industry leaders have praised the updates, emphasizing the importance of science-based practices in protecting Florida’s natural resources while maintaining agricultural productivity.

“Sound science is a foundation of Florida farmers’ success. They rely on research that demonstrates what works in the field, in the grove and on the ranch,” said Scott Angle, UF/IFAS Senior Vice President.

The updated manuals are a result of collaboration between FDACS, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), and industry experts.

The updated BMP manuals are available on the FDACS website, where producers can access the latest guidelines and resources. For more information, visit FDACS.gov.
