TAMPA, Fla. – Floodwaters in the University area of Hillsborough County have receded following a power outage at the Duck Pond pump station caused by Hurricane Milton.
The outage, which occurred around 3 a.m. on Thursday, October 10th, impacted the county’s ability to manage stormwater levels during the storm.
Duck Pond is the county’s largest stormwater pump station and plays a crucial role in mitigating flooding in the low-lying areas of the University area. The combination of Hurricane Milton’s record rainfall (approximately 10.7 inches) and the power outage led to flooding in the area.
Power was restored to the pump station around 10 a.m. on Friday, October 11th, allowing pumps to begin removing water at a rate of roughly 1.1 inches per hour.
Water levels have significantly decreased, and pumps will continue to operate until the flooding is completely eliminated.
