WALTON COUNTY, Fla. – Flags across Walton County will be flown at half-staff this Saturday, April 12, 2025, to honor the memory and sacrifice of Walton County Sheriff’s Deputy William May, who was killed in the line of duty last week.
The directive from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis orders the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be lowered from sunrise to sunset at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout Walton County.
Deputy May was tragically killed on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, while responding to a disturbance call in DeFuniak Springs. According to reports, Deputy May was shot multiple times but managed to neutralize a violent assailant during the encounter. He succumbed to his injuries later that day.
Officials praised Deputy May’s courage, bravery, and unwavering dedication to protecting his community. He served honorably with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office for over eleven years.
Deputy May leaves behind his loving wife, two children, and parents.
The lowering of the flags serves as a mark of respect for Deputy May’s service and ultimate sacrifice for the citizens of Walton County and the State of Florida.
