HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL. – One person has died after a crash that closed the northbound lanes of the Veterans Expressway on Friday.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, a pickup truck was traveling northbound on SR-589 (Veterans Expressway), north of Hillsborough Avenue in the outside lane.
Troopers say that an unloaded tractor-trailer was traveling northbound in the outside center lane, when the driver of the pickup truck lost control and entered the outside shoulder, and collided with a concrete barrier wall.
The pickup truck was redirected back into the travel lanes and collided with the right-side drive axles of the tractor-trailer. Upon impact, the tractor-trailer began to jackknife and both vehicles traveled to the outside shoulder and collided with the barrier wall.
Troopers say that both vehicles came to final rest against the end of the barrier wall and at the start of a metal guardrail at which point both vehicles caught fire and burned severely.
The driver of the pickup truck has yet to have been identified but suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash.
