BROOKSVILLE, Fla. – A female kayaker was airlifted to the hospital on Sunday after a near-drowning incident in Brooksville.
According to officials, just after 8 am on Sunday, HCFR responded to Byster Lake for a reported kayaker who flipped in the water and wasn’t responding.
Fire crews arrived to find the victim above the water, holding onto her kayak but drifting further into the lake.

With assistance from a nearby boater, fire crews were able to rescue the woman and bring her to shore.
After medial evaluation, the patient required helicopter transport to a local trauma center for further treatment.
The victim was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.
