A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit challenging Florida’s law that prohibits biologically male students from competing on women’s and girls’ sports teams.
U.S. District Judge Roy Altman ruled that the 16-year-old Broward County student, identified by the initials D.N., failed to prove that the law was motivated by discriminatory intent. The student, who was diagnosed with gender dysphoria at age 7, had argued that the law violated their equal protection rights.

The law, SB 1028, was passed by the Florida Legislature in 2021 and signed by Governor Ron DeSantis.
The lawsuit, filed in June 2021, argued that the law was discriminatory and unfairly targeted transgender students.
However, Judge Altman disagreed, stating that the student had not provided sufficient evidence to support their claim.
