The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has upgraded a recent recall of Costco eggs to its highest risk level, Class I, citing concerns over potential Salmonella contamination. This classification signifies a “reasonable probability” that consuming the recalled eggs could cause serious health consequences or even death.
The recall, initiated in late November by Handsome Brook Farms, affects approximately 260,000 Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs. These eggs were inadvertently packaged and distributed to 25 Costco stores across Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Although no illnesses have been reported to date, the FDA urges consumers who purchased these eggs to discard them immediately or return them to Costco for a full refund. The affected eggs can be identified by the Julian code 327 and a “Use By” date of January 5, 2025, printed on the side of the carton.
Salmonella infection can cause serious illness, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In severe cases, Salmonella can lead to life-threatening complications.
