In the 1990s, the FBI uncovered a massive forgery ring flooding the U.S. with fake sports and celebrity memorabilia. “Operation Bullpen,” as it was known, became one of the agency’s most successful undercover operations, ultimately leading to the seizure of millions of dollars in counterfeit goods and the dismantling of a nationwide network of forgers and distributors.

The investigation began with a focus on forged autographs of Chicago athletes but quickly expanded to encompass a vast array of counterfeit memorabilia.

The FBI, working with the IRS, went undercover, posing as a distributor in Asia to infiltrate the criminal enterprise and gather evidence. This strategy allowed them to purchase forged items without releasing them to the public, while also obtaining incriminating statements from those involved in the scheme.

In a coordinated takedown in late 1999, over 400 FBI and IRS agents executed more than 60 search warrants across the country. The operation resulted in the seizure of over $500,000 in cash and an estimated $10 million in forged memorabilia, including over 10,000 fake autographed baseballs.

The seized items bore forged signatures of iconic figures like Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Roberto Clemente, Sammy Sosa, and even Mother Teresa. The operation also uncovered a trove of “cut” autographs – pieces of paper containing signatures of deceased individuals like President George Washington, James Dean, and Elvis Presley.

Operation Bullpen stands as a testament to the FBI’s ability to infiltrate and dismantle complex criminal networks. The operation successfully disrupted a major source of fraudulent memorabilia, protecting both sports fans and the integrity of the memorabilia market.
