The FBI and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have issued a public service announcement warning of potential threats from violent extremists following the New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans.

The agencies are concerned about the possibility of copycat or retaliatory attacks, particularly those involving vehicle ramming.

Vehicle ramming attacks have been used by extremists in the past, both in the United States and abroad. These attacks often involve readily available vehicles, such as rented, stolen, or personally owned vehicles, making them relatively easy to carry out. In some cases, attackers have used additional weapons, like firearms or knives, to inflict further harm after using the vehicle to strike their initial targets.

The FBI and DHS also warn of the potential for improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to be used in conjunction with vehicle attacks. Extremists may attempt to conceal and pre-position IEDs to increase the impact of the attack.

Potential targets for these types of attacks include pedestrians, law enforcement officers, military personnel, and crowded public venues like festivals and commercial centers. These locations are often easily accessible from roadways, making them vulnerable to vehicle attacks.

The agencies are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement. They are also working closely with state and local law enforcement partners to ensure they have the necessary resources and information to protect communities.

This public service announcement serves as a reminder of the ongoing threat of violent extremism and the importance of community awareness and cooperation in preventing attacks. By working together and remaining vigilant, we can all contribute to a safer environment for everyone.
