CLEARWATER, Fla. – Clearwater Police and Clearwater Fire & Rescue responded to a water rescue call in the 400 block of South Gulfview Boulevard around 7 p.m. Friday.
Preliminary information shows that two swimmers, a father and son, began struggling in the water near the jetty on the south part of the beach.
The father was pulled from the water and was treated on the scene by police officers and fire medics, then taken to Morton Plant Hospital, where he later died.

The son was taken to Morton Plant as a precaution, but it is expected to be OK.
Police say bystanders helped pull both ashore.
