SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. – The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) is currently assisting the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) with a fatal traffic crash involving a Sheriff’s deputy and a bicyclist at the intersection of South Tamiami Trail and Bay Street.
At approximately 11:38 p.m. Thursday, an on-duty SCSO deputy struck a female bicyclist at the intersection of East Bay Street and North Tamiami Trail in Osprey.
The deputy, who was initially responding to a call for service in a patrol vehicle, immediately stopped to provide aid to the victim.

Additional deputies arrived and provided life-saving efforts; however, the female succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The deputy was uninjured.
At the intersection, all north and southbound lanes of South Tamiami Trail, as well as east and westbound lanes of Bay Street, were closed, but have since reopened.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
