TAMPA, Fla. – Famous Tate Appliance and Bedding Centers collaborated with a local charity in Tampa to provide Westshore Elementary School with a GE Profile Ultra Combo (washer-dryer combo) as part of a unique refurbishment project for students.
The charity, Dorothy Day Ministry, a local organization named after Dorothy Day, a co-founder of the Catholic Worker Movement, aims to create a society in which “it’s easier for people to be good.”
According to YourSourceNews (YSN), the group pledged resources to assist the grade school in creating a “Transformation Room” for teachers and students, which now houses the new Ultra Combo unit.
“It was meant as a reward destination room for kids to help keep them motivated,” said Famous Tate principal Jason Horst to YSN. “It is now equipped with state-of-the-art furniture for collaboration and movement, all funded by local groups. A couple of teachers from the school had created the vision for this room, and the Dorothy Day organization helped make it a reality.
“We had the easy part in helping them complete a part of this room by donating the washer/dryer,” Horst told YSN.
With onsite laundry, participating children no longer have to feel embarrassed about attending class. Currently, approximately 20 students use the Transformation Room’s new laundry arrangement on a daily basis, according to YSN.
Chronic school absenteeism is a pressing issue that affects students across the nation, including Florida. When students miss a significant number of school days, it becomes challenging for them to keep up academically and can have long-term consequences on their educational outcomes.
Lawmakers in Tallahassee are recognizing the urgency of this problem and are drafting a bill to address chronic absenteeism.
The Definition of Chronic Absenteeism
Chronic absenteeism refers to when a student misses 10 percent or more of school days in a given year. This can be due to various reasons such as illness, housing problems, or family issues.
According to a report released by the Florida Department of Education, nearly a million students in the state are considered chronically absent. This alarming number demonstrates the magnitude of the problem and the need for intervention.
The Consequences of Chronic Absenteeism
Chronic absenteeism has severe consequences for students’ academic progress and overall well-being. When students miss a significant number of school days, they fall behind in their coursework and struggle to catch up.
Teachers often have to spend additional time reviewing material for absent students, which can impact the learning experience for the entire class. Moreover, chronic absenteeism disrupts the continuity of education and hampers the development of critical skills and knowledge.
Academic Impact
The academic impact of chronic absenteeism is significant. Students who are frequently absent from school are more likely to perform poorly on exams and assessments. They miss out on valuable classroom instruction, discussions, and collaborative learning opportunities. As a result, their academic achievement may suffer, leading to lower grades and reduced opportunities for future success.
A study conducted by Attendance Works, an organization dedicated to improving school attendance, found that approximately 70 percent of all schools in Florida have a chronic absence rate of 20 percent or more. This means that a significant portion of students in these schools are missing a substantial amount of instructional time, making it difficult for them to achieve their full academic potential.
Social and Emotional Impact
Chronic absenteeism not only affects students academically but also has social and emotional consequences.
When students miss school, they miss out on social interactions with peers and opportunities for personal growth. They may feel isolated and disconnected from their classmates, leading to feelings of loneliness and low self-esteem.
Additionally, chronic absenteeism can contribute to increased stress and anxiety. Students who are frequently absent may experience heightened levels of stress due to falling behind in their coursework and facing difficulties in catching up. This can have a negative impact on their mental health and overall well-being.
Long-Term Impact
The impact of chronic absenteeism extends beyond the immediate academic and social consequences. Research has shown that students who are chronically absent are more likely to drop out of school and have lower educational attainment. They may struggle to transition successfully to higher education or the workforce, limiting their opportunities for future career growth and financial stability.
Furthermore, chronic absenteeism has implications for societal well-being. Students who do not receive a quality education are less likely to become engaged and productive citizens. They may face challenges in finding stable employment, contributing to the cycle of poverty and inequality.
Efforts to Address Chronic Absenteeism
Recognizing the urgency of addressing chronic absenteeism, lawmakers in Tallahassee are taking steps to tackle this issue.
They are currently drafting a bill to track the prevalence of chronic absenteeism and gain a better understanding of the factors contributing to this problem. By collecting comprehensive data, policymakers can develop targeted interventions and allocate resources effectively.
In addition to legislative efforts, schools and districts are implementing strategies to improve attendance rates. These strategies include early identification and intervention for at-risk students, collaboration with families and community organizations, and creating a positive and inclusive school climate that values attendance.
