The family of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an Israeli-American who was taken hostage by militants during a music festival in southern Israel on October 7, has confirmed his death in the Gaza Strip.

The announcement came early Sunday, following reports from the Israeli army that bodies had been located in Gaza.

“With broken hearts, the Goldberg-Polin family is devastated to announce the death of their beloved son and brother, Hersh,” the family said in a statement. “The family thanks you all for your love and support and asks for privacy at this time.”

Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23, was among the hostages taken during the attack and had lost part of an arm. His parents, who became prominent advocates for the hostages, met with President Joe Biden, Pope Francis, and addressed the United Nations.

They also spoke at the Democratic National Convention, where the crowd rallied behind them with chants of “Bring them home.”
