Corporal Elio Diaz, an 11-year veteran of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, tragically lost his life in the line of duty after being shot during a traffic stop on December 15, 2024. Despite efforts to save him, Corporal Diaz succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. He leaves behind a grieving family, including his wife and four children, as well as a community in mourning.
Corporal Diaz was known for his incredible bravery, unwavering dedication to public safety, and deep commitment to his community. His loss has left a profound impact on the residents of Charlotte County and law enforcement across the state.

In honor of his service and sacrifice, a proclamation has been issued directing that the flags of the United States and the State of Florida be flown at half-staff in Charlotte County on Friday, December 20, 2024, from sunrise to sunset.
“Corporal Elio Diaz will always be remembered for his selfless service and the courage he displayed every day as he worked to protect others,” the proclamation stated.
The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office expressed their profound gratitude for his years of service and pledged their continued support to his family.
“Elio was a friend, a good family man. He loved his children. And he was a really great cop,” Charlotte County Sheriff Prummell said. “He’s going to be missed. Please keep Elio and his family in your thoughts and prayers, especially at this time of year.”
