The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has imposed temporary restrictions on drone operations across parts of New Jersey, citing security concerns and warning that drones posing imminent threats could be met with “deadly force.”
The restrictions, effective from December 18 through January 17, 2025, apply to specified airspace outlined in a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM).
The restrictions cover a broad area of New Jersey, including heavily populated regions such as Jersey City, Bayonne, Elizabeth, Harrison, Kearny, Edison, Bridgewater, and Camden, among others. The FAA’s directive bans unmanned aircraft from operating within a nautical mile of these locations.
The temporary flight restrictions come in response to ongoing drone activity in the state. Drones have been spotted over New Jersey since mid-November, raising concerns about potential security threats.
The FAA has outlined stringent measures against those who violate the restricted airspace:
- Drones breaching the restricted zones may be intercepted.
- Operators could face detainment and questioning by law enforcement or security personnel.
- Violators risk suspension or revocation of their drone operator certificates and may also face criminal charges.

The temporary ban underscores heightened concerns about the misuse of unmanned aerial vehicles in urban and critical areas. While the FAA has not disclosed specific threats prompting the restrictions, the agency’s measures reflect a proactive approach to preventing potential incidents.
The restrictions are set to expire on January 17, 2025, unless extended or modified by the FAA.
