Former Obama aides Jon Lovett, Jon Favreau, and Tommy Vietor on Tuesday criticized Democrats over how they have attempted to attack President Donald Trump during his second term thus far.

Over a dozen Democratic elected officials and strategists told Politico recently that they are taking a less aggressive approach to attacking Trump as they wait for Americans to stop supporting him. The former Obama aides, on their “Pod Save America” podcast, took issue with Democrats’ passive strategy as well as a particular attack line the party has started using.

“Now we’re talking about all these Democrats kind of overthinking, like, how are we going to respond to this? Let’s get out the abacus and move the beads around to figure out the perfect response. And I can’t possibly start speaking until I know exactly what my overall vision is for the future of the country,” Lovett said. “And it’s like, is that the lesson you draw from the last four years? Get the fuck out there, get out there, start responding, tell the truth. How about that? Like, you’re asked about what you think about the January 6 pardons, tell us what you think of them.”

“You’re worried about what’s happening at the National Institutes of Health, tell us what you’re thinking about it. You don’t leave the field and build some playbook for how to respond and defeat Donald Trump,” he continued. “You get out there and you start doing it. You see what works, you see what doesn’t … That whole piece was just a bunch of people kind of trying to like, ‘We’re going to crack the code finally at long last.”

Favreau clarified that Lovett was referring to the Politico article before taking aim at Democrats for criticizing Trump over not lowering egg prices in his first week in office.

“I feel like sometimes giving messaging advice to Democrats is like giving fucking kids matches. You know, it’s like you say something about like inflation and the cost of living, and suddenly they’re all out there being like, ‘That’s not going to do anything to lower the price of eggs.’ It’s like, come on, make it fucking believable, guys,” Favreau said. “It’s just not believable right now. No one is out there thinking that Donald Trump was going to lower the price of eggs or lower the cost of everything after a fucking week.”

“I think that what was annoying about some of the statements you guys talked about was, you’re right, you don’t have to combine the cost of eggs and January 6 pardons,” Vietor responded. “It’s bad to pardon insurrectionists that beat up cops.”

Trump signed an executive order on his first day in office giving “full, complete and unconditional pardons” to an estimated 1,500 Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol protesters.

Favreau and fellow former Obama aide and “Pod Save America” co-host Dan Pfeiffer also expressed concern during a Friday podcast that population shifts from blue to red states could worsen Democrats’ chances in future elections.

“I don’t even want to depress people, but take a look at what the 2032 electoral map’s going to look like. And once you do that, you’re going to realize that we have massive work to do to reconfigure our coalition,” Pfeiffer said. “And we have to be willing to ask really hard questions and I’m not convinced that enough people in the party are willing to ask those questions right now.”
