Ex-Alabama Police Sergeant Pleads Guilty To Violating Arrestee’s Civil Rights

Former Daleville Police Department Sergeant Ryan Phillips has admitted to using excessive force against an individual in custody, identified as D.M.

Phillips pleaded guilty to depriving an arrestee of his civil rights, admitting that he entered D.M.’s cell and struck him multiple times without any justifiable reason, causing injuries.

The Justice Department emphasized that such abuses of power erode public trust in law enforcement and vowed to hold officers accountable. The U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama stressed the importance of upholding the law, even for those tasked with enforcing it.

The FBI also condemned Phillips’ actions, highlighting the breach of trust inherent in his behavior.

Phillips now faces up to 10 years in prison. A sentencing hearing will be held at a later date.
