In a move aimed at reducing costs and expanding options for American households, U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, under the leadership of President Donald Trump, announced today that the Department of Energy (DOE) will postpone the implementation of seven energy efficiency mandates on home appliances enacted by the Biden-Harris administration.

The decision marks a significant step in rolling back what the Trump administration describes as overly restrictive regulations that have driven up prices, limited consumer choice, and compromised the quality of household appliances.

“A top priority for President Trump is lowering costs for American families,” Secretary Wright said in a statement. “Today’s announcement will foster consumer choice and lower prices—it is a win for all Americans. The people, not the government, should be choosing the home appliances and products they want at prices they can afford.”

The postponed efficiency standards affect a wide range of household and commercial appliances, including:

  • Central Air Conditioners
  • Clothes Washers and Dryers
  • General Service Lamps
  • Walk-In Coolers and Freezers
  • Gas Instantaneous Water Heaters
  • Commercial Refrigeration Equipment
  • Air Compressors

In addition to delaying these mandates, the DOE is introducing a new energy efficiency category for natural gas tankless water heaters.

This exemption ensures that these affordable and popular appliances remain accessible to consumers without being burdened by what the administration calls “onerous” regulations.

The Trump administration has consistently criticized the Biden-Harris administration’s energy efficiency rules, arguing that they have led to higher costs and fewer options for consumers.

Secretary Wright emphasized that the postponement of these mandates is part of a broader effort to reduce unnecessary regulations and give Americans more control over their purchasing decisions.
