Elon Musk announced Tuesday his intention to significantly reduce his role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), stating that the core mission he undertook for the Trump administration is nearing completion.

Speaking during a Tesla earnings call, the billionaire entrepreneur indicated his involvement with DOGE would decrease “significantly” starting in May 2025. He described the bulk of the government reform effort as “mostly done,” according to reports from Axios.

However, Musk clarified that he plans to maintain a connection with the department throughout President Donald Trump’s current term to ensure the implemented changes remain effective. “I’ll have to continue doing it for I think the remainder of the president’s term just to make sure the waste and fraud that we stopped does not come roaring back, which it will do if it has the chance,” Musk stated, as reported by Axios. He anticipates dedicating “a day or two per week on government matters” as long as President Trump finds his involvement useful.

Musk’s simultaneous positions as CEO of Tesla and the federal government’s efficiency lead have faced mounting scrutiny. Some Tesla investors have expressed concerns that his political activities and alignment with the Trump administration could be negatively affecting the electric vehicle company’s brand image.

Addressing these concerns on the earnings call, Musk conceded that Tesla had experienced “a few bumps in the road” related to his government role and association with President Trump, but assured listeners the company remains fundamentally strong.

“I encourage people to look beyond the bumps and potholes of the road immediately ahead of us,” Musk urged. “Lift your gaze to the bright shining citadel on the hill — I don’t know, some Reagan-esque imagery — and that’s where we’re headed.”

The controversy surrounding Musk’s government position has intensified recently. March saw an escalation in protests targeting Musk and Tesla, including incidents where charging stations were vandalized and set on fire. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that three individuals suspected of using Molotov cocktails in attacks on Tesla property will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Musk was appointed by the Trump administration after the President took office in January 2025, tasked with heading the newly formed DOGE to review federal spending and identify areas for significant cost savings.

His work drew sharp criticism from Democrats, especially following his announcement in February, via the social media platform X, that he and President Trump had agreed to overhaul the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Musk publicly contended that USAID was wasting billions in taxpayer money and alleged that some of its initiatives promoted a “far-left agenda” internationally, potentially offering indirect support to extremist organizations and controversial foreign entities.
