Carlton Rembert, a 70-year-old man from Virginia, was sentenced to 66 months in prison for his role in a scheme that defrauded elderly individuals under his sister’s care. His sister, the late Gloria Byars, was a court-appointed guardian in Pennsylvania who, along with Rembert and another accomplice, stole over $1 million from vulnerable wards under her protection.
Byars had access to the wards’ finances and exploited this by writing unauthorized checks to shell companies she and her accomplices controlled.

Rembert’s role involved opening bank accounts for these fake companies and depositing the stolen funds. He then withdrew large sums of cash and obtained certified checks, sharing the proceeds with Byars.
Despite claiming to provide services to the victims, Rembert was found guilty of conspiracy, bank fraud, and wire fraud. Victims’ families testified that they had never heard of Rembert’s supposed companies and that no services were ever provided.

The stolen money was used for personal expenses like vacations, shopping sprees, and parties. Rembert’s accomplice, Alesha Mitchell, is awaiting sentencing. Authorities are committed to holding accountable those who prey on vulnerable individuals and abuse positions of trust.
