The Eastern Pacific is currently facing the threat of two active tropical cyclones: Hurricane Gilma and Tropical Storm Hector.

Hurricane Gilma, currently packing maximum sustained winds of 100 kt and gusts up to 120 kt, is moving west at 9 kt. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for areas near the storm, where dangerous seas of 12 ft or greater are expected, with some areas potentially experiencing seas up to 37 ft. Gilma is forecast to weaken slightly over the next 48 hours.

Tropical Storm Hector, with maximum sustained winds of 40 kt and gusts up to 50 kt, is also moving west at 10 kt. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for areas in its path. Hector is expected to strengthen to 50 kt in the next 24 hours and maintain that intensity for the following 24 hours. Seas of 8 to 11 ft are expected near the storm, with potential for seas up to 18 ft in some areas.

In other parts of the Eastern Pacific, winds are generally 20 kt or less with seas less than 8 ft. However, two tropical waves are being monitored for potential development.

The National Weather Service is reminding mariners to use caution when navigating near the active tropical cyclones due to the uncertainty in their track, size, and intensity. Additionally, the NWS is seeking public comment on a proposal to replace feet with meters when describing seas in high seas areas.
