A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California on Thursday, briefly triggering a rare tsunami warning for coastal areas near the California-Oregon border, including the San Francisco Bay Area.

The quake, which hit approximately 39 miles offshore, prompted an emergency alert warning residents of a potential tsunami. Over 5 million people are currently under the warning, urging them to evacuate coastal areas and seek higher ground.

“A series of powerful waves may impact the coast near you,” the alert warned. “You are in danger. Get away from coastal waters, move to high ground or inland. Keep away from the coast until local officials say it is safe to return.”

Governor Gavin Newsom has been briefed on the situation and is reportedly meeting with state emergency officials to coordinate a response. The state operations center has been activated to manage the unfolding situation.

This earthquake and subsequent tsunami warning put the region on high alert.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging residents to heed the warnings and take necessary precautions.
