Dunedin Woman Critically Injured After Being Struck In Publix Parking Lot

DUNEDIN, Fla. – An 83-year-old woman is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle in the Publix parking lot at 1491 Main Street in Dunedin. The incident occurred at approximately 3:03 p.m.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT), 71-year-old Mary Canfield was driving through the parking lot when she stopped to allow another vehicle to exit.

As Canfield backed up, she struck 83-year-old Carol Spezzano, who was walking through the crosswalk pushing a shopping cart. The impact threw Spezzano to the ground, causing her to hit her head on the pavement.

Spezzano was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators stated that speed and impairment do not appear to be factors in the crash. Next of kin has been notified. The investigation is ongoing.
