Drunk Tampa Man Driving Wrong-Way Wreaks Havoc On I-4 Sunday

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – A drunken 28-year-old Tampa man has been arrested after wreaking havoc on Interstate 4 Sunday Morning.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, at approximately 6:20 AM, Terrence Murphy, 28, of Tampa, Florida, impaired and driving a white 2011 Dodge Journey, was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 4. 

Near mile marker 3, a westbound vehicle took evasive action to avoid Murphy and collided with the highway barrier wall.  Again, near mile marker 4, another westbound vehicle took evasive action to avoid Murphy and collided with an adjacent westbound vehicle. 

Near mile maker 6, Murphy again caused another vehicle to take evasive action to avoid a collision, and that vehicle also crashed into the highway barriers. 

Without stopping for any of the three crashes, Murphy continued until nearly County Line Road before being stopped by Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Deputies were able to stop and arrest him after nearly colliding with one of the deputies. 

Murphy was taken into custody by HCSO personnel and delivered to the Orient Road jail, where he refused a breath test.  It is unknown where Murphy, who possesses a valid Florida license, began driving in the wrong direction. 

Investigators say that FHP Troopers are investigating the three crashes and will also apply charges against Murphy. 

The FHP charges include multiple counts of DUI property damage, leaving the crash scene with property damage, leaving the scene of a crash with injury, reckless driving with property damage, driving in the wrong direction.
