Traffic Stop Leads To Drug And Weapon Charges For Two Teenagers In Florida Keys

MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – Two teenagers were arrested Friday night in the Florida Keys after a traffic stop uncovered marijuana and a loaded handgun in their vehicle.

The incident occurred near Mile Marker 87 on U.S. 1 when a Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy stopped a Mitsubishi with a defective headlight. The driver, 17-year-old Christopher Castro Hernandez of Homestead, admitted to having marijuana in the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded 9mm Glock handgun, approximately 58 grams of marijuana, a bong, and THC vape pens.

Charges Filed

Hernandez was arrested and charged with:

  • Possession of a firearm in commission of a felony
  • Possession of marijuana
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Possession of a THC vape pen

The passenger, 19-year-old Yelson Eduardo Corrales Flores of Key Largo, was also charged with possession of a THC vape pen.
