Driver Takes out Lights and Signs Overnight in Winter Haven

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The traffic signals at Hwy 17 and Ave M NW (the intersection at Publix Northgate and St. Joseph Catholic Church) are on flash mode due to an overnight crash involving a semi-truck. North and south lanes of travel of Hwy 17 are flashing yellow and temporary stop signs are east and west. Both turn lanes on Hwy 17 are blocked to prevent crossover traffic.

There are ample traffic cones and signage to alert drivers. The traffic impact at this intersection is expected to continue until at least Monday, October 5.

Drivers should consider alternate routes if possible during their travels until the situation is remedied.

Witnesses followed the driver after taking down the traffic light. The driver ran over a street sign at Ave. L NW and then hit a power pole at 7th St and Ave I NW. When police arrived, they administered Field Sobriety Test which the driver passed. The driver claimed he was tired and not familiar with the Winter Haven area.

The driver was cited for leaving the scene of a crash with property damage and careless driving. There were no injuries in any of the events.
