President-elect Donald J. Trump has announced the nomination of Paul Atkins to serve as the next Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Atkins, a former SEC Commissioner and experienced leader in financial regulation, is set to bring his expertise to the agency amid rapid innovation in capital markets and digital assets.
“Paul is a proven leader for common-sense regulations,” Trump said in a statement. “He believes in the promise of robust, innovative capital markets that are responsive to the needs of investors and that provide capital to make our economy the best in the world. He also recognizes that digital assets and other innovations are crucial to making America greater than ever before.”

As an SEC Commissioner from 2002 to 2008, Atkins was a strong advocate for transparency and investor protection.
Atkins holds a Juris Doctor from Vanderbilt University School of Law and an A.B. degree from Wofford College, where he graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.
Trump offered his congratulations to Atkins and his family, noting the nominee’s readiness to take on the role. “Congratulations to Paul, his wonderful wife, Sarah, and their sons, Stewart, Peter, and Henry,” Trump added.

Atkins’ nomination comes at a pivotal time for the SEC, as the agency faces increasing pressure to address the growing influence of digital assets and ensure the U.S. remains a leader in global financial markets. His deep understanding of both traditional finance and emerging technologies is expected to shape the SEC’s approach to regulation and innovation.
The nomination now moves to the Senate for confirmation. If approved, Atkins will lead the SEC in shaping policies that balance market growth, investor protection, and innovation.
