The Justice Department is preparing criminal charges related to an Iranian hack targeting Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, according to sources familiar with the case. The FBI investigation, which linked the intrusion to Iran’s efforts to influence the 2024 U.S. election, may result in charges soon.

This development comes as the DOJ has warned about foreign interference, particularly from Iran, Russia, and China, in the U.S. election.
Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen said Iran is becoming more aggressive in its attempts to shape the election, seeing it as crucial to its national security.
“Iran is making a greater effort to influence this year’s election than it has in prior election cycles and that Iranian activity is growing increasingly aggressive as this election nears,” Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen said in a speech Thursday in New York. “Iran perceives this year’s elections to be particularly consequential in impacting Iran’s national security interests, increasing Tehran’s inclination to try to shape the outcome.”

The Trump campaign revealed in August that Iranian hackers had stolen sensitive documents, which were leaked to several media outlets, though none have disclosed details.
