America’s Catholic president openly signals that the left’s war on Catholicism can continue unimpeded.
Fox News reported on Wednesday that the Justice Department offered a “sweetheart” plea deal to a transgender vandal who admitted to trashing a Catholic church with “profane graffiti, destroying a statue of the Virgin Mary, assaulting a church worker, and resisting arrest.”
Maeve Nota, a 31-year-old “transgender individual,” attacked St. Louise Catholic Church in Bellevue, Washington, last summer. Nota was reportedly angry that the Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision last June.

As Fox News reported, “Nota smashed two glass doors with rocks and spray-painted the church’s outside walls with messages that read, ‘F— Catholics,’ ‘rot in your fake hell,’ ‘kid groomers,’ and ‘woman haters,’ among several other messages.”
“A church staff member was spray-painted across their face while attempting to chase Nota away,” Fox News added. Nota also smashed a police car with a backpack of spray paint in fleeing the authorities.
Local police called Nota’s attack a hate crime.
In early March, the Justice Department “hit Nota with destruction of religious property, a misdemeanor that can carry up to one year in prison and $100,000 in fines.”

But just a week later, though, “a previously unreported plea agreement between the Justice Department, Nota, and his attorney shows that they will recommend no jail time and three years of probation at the time of his sentencing on June 2,” Fox News reported.
Contrast that with other outcomes from the pro-life side.
In January, pro-life activist Mark Houck narrowly avoided an 11-year prison term by being acquitted of violating federal law during a pro-life demonstration. That law, the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, or FACE Act, guarantees access to abortion clinics. But federal prosecutors had a better time with Fr. Fidelis Moscinski, a Catholic priest accused of violating the FACE Act because he chained and padlocked a New York abortion clinic’s doors for two hours. He faces a year in jail.
Those cases came three months after the Biden administration arrested and accused 11 other pro-life activists with breaking the FACE Act.

In February, the conservative Daily Signal reported that in 2022 Biden’s Justice Department “charged 26 pro-life activists with FACE Act violations.”
Yet, the agency “did not charge a single pro-abortion activist with FACE Act charges in 2022, despite over 100 apparent pro-abortion attacks on pro-life pregnancy centers and churches across the nation.”
Catholic Vote President Brian Burch told The Daily Signal that Biden’s inaction “further confirms that this administration will spare no expense or resource when it comes to hunting down pro-life Americans.”
“The shame is that they have no interest in equally pursuing pro-abortion domestic criminals that have vandalized and desecrated hundreds of churches and pregnancy care centers,” Burch added.
“The Department of Justice should not play favorites when enforcing the law, yet that seems to be the new policy. Once again, when it comes to abortion, all pretense of equal justice is abandoned.”
