PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – On Sunday, around 12:10 p.m., a distracted driver caused a major accident on the Gandy Bridge.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, a car was traveling westbound on US-92, along the Gandy Bridge, in the inside lane. A second car, an unmarked FHP patrol car, was stopped westbound on US-92 behind a car which was stopped, disabled, and parked partially in the travel lane and emergency shoulder.
A third was stopped westbound on US-92 in the outside lane. While driving, a 49-year-old woman from Brandon was distracted by looking down at her GPS; upon looking back at the roadway, she saw the stopped vehicles and swerved to the right. The left of her collided with the right rear of the FHP Trooper and the disabled car. She then began to overturn when the front of her car collided with the rear of the third stopped vehicle.
The Brandon woman came to rest overturned as other cars were propelled forward, with the front of one of the cars colliding with a trailer towed by an SUV.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, all drivers and passengers escaped this crash with either minor injuries on no injuries.
