“Operation Medicine Cabinet” offers a safe and responsible way to dispose of both prescription and over-the-counter medications that are no longer needed.
The Florida Department of Environmental Safety warns against flushing medications down toilets or drains. While this method may prevent accidental ingestion, it can contaminate Florida’s aquatic environment. Wastewater treatment systems are not designed to remove many of the pharmaceutical compounds found in medications.
By participating in “Operation Medicine Cabinet,” residents can ensure their expired or unwanted medications are disposed of properly, preventing potential harm to local water sources. This initiative helps safeguard the health of Hillsborough County’s waterways and protects the environment.
