Disability Rights Florida (DRF) has filed a lawsuit against the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF), alleging the agency has failed to collect and report data on the use of the Baker Act.
The Baker Act allows for the involuntary commitment of individuals with mental illness. State law mandates that DCF collect and publish data on Baker Act usage, including information on patient demographics, length of stay, and insurance status.

DRF argues that the lack of data hinders its ability to monitor psychiatric hospitals and advocate for the rights of individuals with mental illness. The organization contends that the data would provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of the Baker Act and identify potential areas for improvement.
The lawsuit seeks a court order compelling DCF to comply with the law and produce the required reports.
