In her first address to staff as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Kristi Noem delivered an impassioned and heartfelt speech on Tuesday, outlining her vision for the department’s role in safeguarding the American people. Speaking to DHS employees, Noem emphasized the critical mission of the agency and her commitment to equipping and supporting staff to meet the challenges of a complex and dangerous world.
“You are on the front lines, and sometimes the last ones in, to help pick up the pieces,” Noem said. “You see people on their very worst days, but your presence brings comfort and stability when their whole world seems shaken.”

Noem pledged to ensure DHS employees have the training, tools, and resources needed to perform their duties effectively. Drawing from her background in business, state legislature, and Congress, she stressed the importance of preparation and forward thinking.
“I will do everything I can to give you the resources you need to do your job. You need training, equipment, and the ability to adapt to every situation you face,” Noem stated. “We must think ahead and be ready to meet challenges before they arise.”
Noem recalled a personal story from her childhood growing up on a farm, where her father taught her the value of anticipating needs and being prepared. She likened this lesson to the department’s role in thinking three steps ahead to keep the nation safe.
The secretary reiterated the department’s vast responsibilities, including protecting the homeland from foreign and domestic threats, ensuring cybersecurity, and overseeing the safety of products and people entering and leaving the country.

“We have jurisdiction over people who live here, people who visit, and products that come in and out of the country,” Noem said. “We will exercise all legal authorities to protect this country, because it is our responsibility to safeguard the freedoms and blessings we enjoy as Americans.”
Noem also highlighted the importance of DHS’s diverse missions, from disaster response to border security and cyber protection, while emphasizing that the department’s ultimate goal is to leave the nation safer for future generations.
In her address, Noem expressed her admiration for the dedication of DHS employees, acknowledging the sacrifices they make to protect the nation.
“I am thrilled to be part of the DHS family,” she said. “Your mission is vast, and I know you approach it with the seriousness it requires. I will walk alongside you, support you, and lead when necessary.”
Acknowledging the dangerous and unpredictable nature of today’s world, Noem said the department must remain nimble and proactive in addressing emerging threats, whether they stem from foreign adversaries, cyberattacks, or natural disasters.
“The world is a dangerous place, and we are the first line of defense for anyone within the American homeland,” she said. “We will face challenges, but together, we will rise to the occasion and fulfill our mission to protect and serve.”
Noem concluded her speech by urging staff to take pride in their roles as stewards of the nation’s security, emphasizing the blessings of living in the United States.
“We woke up this morning in the greatest country in the world. That is a gift and a responsibility,” Noem said. “May God bless the United States of America and keep us all safe.”
The secretary’s speech was met with applause and optimism, setting a strong tone for her leadership and the department’s mission under her tenure.
