Each day thousands of illegal immigrants flow across America’s southern border with little to no enforcement or harassment from U.S. officials. In fact, on occasion, the Border Patrol has cut razor wire to let them in.
But the Biden administration has found one small set of asylum-seekers who came here quasi-illegally that it is willing to deport: a devout Christian family of nine from Germany who fled their native land seeking freedom to home-school their children.
As Tampa Free Press reported on Monday, President Joe Biden’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency is set to deport Uwe and Hannelore Romeike and their seven children, two of whom were born in America, after they have lived in Tennessee for the past 15 years.

“We still trust God to make a way for us to stay here. I know it’s kind of impossible, but that’s where we know God can still do the impossible,” Uwe told Daily Wire.
The family’s tale begins in 2006 when the Romeikes pulled their then-five kids from the public school system in their native Germany and began home-schooling them.
Homeschooling is rare in Germany, often only permitted for medical reasons, Daily Wire noted. The German government fined the family roughly $9,000 and threatened to remove the Romeike children from their parents.
In 2008, the family fled to America, and an immigration judge allowed them to stay.
Ultimately, President Barack Obama’s Justice Department fought the judge’s decision.
In 2013, a court ruled that the family failed to prove that the German government would persecute them if they returned — even though Uwe told Daily Wire that homeschooling families in Germany have been stripped of their homes and businesses for not abiding by the education system.
Despite the judge’s ruling, the family was allowed to stay in the U.S. as long as they checked in each year with immigration officials.

This month, the family was told to come in for a meeting with immigration officials, despite having met with them earlier this year.
Uwe said officials told him that he, his wife, and their five oldest children would be expected to self-deport within a month.
“This came as a surprise. We did not expect anything like this,” Uwe told Daily Wire, adding that the Biden administration did not give them any explanation for the sudden shift.
Kevin Boden, a lawyer representing the family, told Daily Wire it was unclear why the Biden administration cracked down on the Romeikes, even as it gives a pass to almost every other illegal immigrant.
“They’re here with the approval of the United States government, but without permanent residency or citizenship status,” he acknowledged.
But, he added, “It’s tough to know — is it a new official who came into ICE and is looking at this? Is it the Biden administration? Is it just the individual ICE officer who doesn’t understand this or was there some superior in the bureaucratic process somewhere who just decided they wanted to affect the deportation? I don’t know.”
“I don’t want to speculate, but there appears to be some change of orders at some point in the chain there,” he said. “If you had to think about all the people that you would have to be concerned about in the United States, this is the type of family that you would absolutely welcome into your community.”
An ICE spokesperson told Daily Wire little about the Romeikes’ case or why the government demanded their removal, other than to say the case was reviewed appropriately.
